BERNARDSTON — The Bernardston Kiwanis Club’s seasonal chicken pot pie dinners will kick off on Saturday, Jan. 31, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the United Church of Bernardston.

Dinners are $15 for adults and $5 for children. Each of the dinners, held on Jan. 31, Feb. 28, March 28 and April 25, will raise money for the Kiwanis Club’s community partners. The first dinner’s proceeds will benefit Pioneer Valley Regional School’s athletics booster club.

The night before the dinner at the church, Kiwanis Club members will prepare enough chicken pot pie, butternut squash, cranberry sauce and dinner rolls to feed 200 people, according to Kiwanis Club member Dan Devine, who chairs the committee behind the dinners. Attendees can also pick up frozen chicken pot pies on their way out.

But for Devine, the showstopper of the meal is the finale.

“The homemade carrot cake is the kicker,” Devine said.

He described preparation of the carrot cake as a “day-long event,” with longtime member Russell Deane following his signature secret recipe.

“It takes a whole crew to do it,” Devine said of the roughly 15 Kiwanis Club members and Pioneer booster club members who will help at Saturday’s meal. “Everybody’s got a part.”

From toy drives to senior dinners, free pancake breakfasts, Scarecrow in the Park, Halloween candy drives, the holiday tree lighting and other Kiwanis Club events, Devine said the support from groups in town, including the United Church of Bernardston, the Bernardston Fire and Police departments, local businesses, the Selectboard and the Bernardston Veterans Club make the Kiwanis Club’s work possible.

“They’re not afraid to help out,” Devine said of the club’s supporters. “We’re really lucky, we have some good people.”
