I am writing in response to the pro MAGA/Trump letters that occasionally appear in the Recorder, also to the angry middle-aged guys who sometimes give me their middle finger for holding a sign simply saying democracy is better than oligarchy. To these “patriots” I ask if they recall what Trump promised before the election? A few examples include: lower cost of living, deportation of murderers, rapists, and drug addicts, and an America First agenda.

But instead of lower costs we get inflationary tariffs and a relentless push for the Fed to lower interest rates (also inflationary, but beneficial to corporations and the already-rich). That shopping trip any less stressful now?

Instead of selective immigration enforcement concentrating on the most undesirable elements, the administration, because of quotas, goes after the low-hanging fruit. These are hardworking people and families working in agriculture, hospitality, and construction — often jobs seen as undesirable. But it is essential work and I don’t see replacements lining up.

Instead of an America First agenda we get an Everywhere Else First agenda. So far Trump has bombed seven or eight countries, abducted the president of Venezuela, threatened to take ally Greenland by force, and, much to China’s and Russia’s delight, presented the biggest threat to the NATO alliance since its formation in 1949.

Is this what you voted for?
