After reading the recent article about John Erving [“Remembering the man behind Erving’s name, Recorder, Sept. 4], I have a question. Did the Massachusetts Bay Colony in fact own or have a right to sell 16,000 acres to John Erving?

Massachusetts is the name of an Indigenous nation. Does the article not perpetuate an origin story that erases the Indigenous people who lived here?
