Attendees are asked to bring their own cardboard, but the library will have cutting, measuring and adhesive tools on hand for you to use. Copies of the book “Cat Castles” by Carin Oliver are also available in the main lobby for inspiration.

Christmas tree disposal available through DPW

GREENFIELD — The Department of Public Works is reminding the community of two disposal options for Christmas trees.

Greenfield residents who receive curbside rubbish collection can place Christmas trees curbside for collection at no charge. The curbside collection period starts Monday, Jan. 5, and ends Thursday, Jan. 29. Christmas tree collection may not always fall on the same day as trash collection and will be done using trucks other than the rubbish truck.

Alternatively, Christmas trees can also be disposed of at the Transfer Station at 86 Cumberland Road. There is no charge for Greenfield residents. There is a $10 charge for non-residents.

Transfer Station hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Starting Jan. 17, the Transfer Station will switch to its winter hours on Saturdays, which will be 7:30 a.m. to noon.

With questions, contact the DPW office by phone at 413-772-1528 or by email at DPW@greenfield-ma.gov.

Advance registration at greenfieldpl.libcal.com/event/16026854 is recommended. The program is made possible through funding from the Library Initiative for Teens and Tweens.

Participants will be introduced to the art of needle felting with a simple beginner’s project of felted acorns. This project will use a variety of felting needles and techniques that are used to sculpt wool fiber into three-dimensional shapes.

Workshop supplies will be provided by the library and participants will be given a resource list should they wish to continue the craft on their own. Intermediate and advanced workshops for additional 3D projects may be scheduled if there is sufficient interest.

Library program encourages ‘Letters of Light’

GREENFIELD — Starting Jan. 6, Community Conversations and the Greenfield Public Library invite residents to participate in a community art project, “Dear Neighbor: Letters of Light During Dark Times.”

Individuals are encouraged to write letters to someone who has brought light into their lives — a friend, a family member, a stranger, a mentor — especially during moments of personal or political darkness. The project offers a space to celebrate small acts of kindness, everyday heroes and moments of hope.

Letter-writing tables are set up throughout the library. Participants can leave the letter and it will be hung up on the library’s wall of positivity.
