City reminds residents of leaf disposal options

GREENFIELD — Home and business owners are reminded that it is a violation of city ordinances to rake or blow leaves onto the tree belt or into the street. Leaves can block storm drains and cause drainage problems during rainstorms.

Leaves can be brought to the Greenfield Transfer Station compost pile free of charge. Leaves must be either loose or in compostable paper bags. If brought in plastic bags, the leaves must be emptied from the bags and the bags taken. Transfer Station hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Greenfield Department of Public Works offers curbside collection on the following Fridays: Nov. 7, Nov. 14 and Nov. 21. For a $10 prepaid fee, residents can have up to 20 compostable 30-gallon paper bags of leaves and grass clippings collected from their home. Residents can schedule pickup by calling 413-772-1528 or emailing DPW@greenfield-ma.gov. Scheduling must be complete and payment received by noon on the Thursday before the scheduled pickup date.

The city also encourages residents to consider starting leaf composting piles in their backyards. Residents who are interested in composting can learn more at tinyurl.com/GreenfieldCompostingInfo or by using a guide from the state Department of Environmental Protection at cms5.revize.com/revize/greenfield/DPW_-_Home_Composting.pdf.
