Connecticut River Defenders holding ‘Dump the Pump’ rally
NORTHFIELD — The Connecticut River Defenders will again hold a “Dump the Pump” rally at the intake of FirstLight Hydro Generating Co.’s Northfield Mountain Pumped Storage Station (the Riverview Picnic Area on Ferry Road) on Sunday, Oct. 19, from 1 to 3 p.m.
The rally will include speakers, music, refreshments and updates on FirstLight’s relicensing process through the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, as well as the Connecticut River Defenders’ participation as appellants to the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection’s April 22 issuance of a 401 Water Quality Certification.
The Connecticut River Defenders have been engaged in a three-year effort to prevent FERC from issuing FirstLight another 50-year license to operate. A water quality certification from MassDEP is required for FirstLight’s relicensure.
The Connecticut River Defenders argue that the Northfield Mountain Pumped Storage Station should be shut down due to its impact on the environment.
“The environmental destruction of the Connecticut River and its ecosystem has reached its end,” Chicopee resident Fergus Marshall, a member of the Connecticut River Defenders, said in a statement. “We can no longer abuse this majestic river for our own insatiable wants.”
