TURNERS FALLS — A picture-perfect October afternoon looked over Thomas Memorial Golf Club, where the Franklin Tech golf team hosted Smith Vocational on Monday. Behind a stellar even-par round of 35 from Jack Day, the Eagles got the best of the Vikings by a score of 157-176 to improve their record to 13-3 overall and 13-2 in the Bi-County League East.
Day was one of two golfers to break 40 on Monday, as his teammate and playing partner Grady Deery turned in a 39 as well. The duo of Day and Deery proved to be too much for Smith Vocational.
Rounding out Franklin Tech’s scoring was Braeden Talbot (40) and Mason Vassar (43). The win marked the fifth time the Eagles broke 160 as a team score.
For Smith Vocational, Keller McMahon led the way with a 42 including an impressive drive and approach shot on the par-4 5th hole. Andrew Persaud carded a 44 while Nate Lardahl and RJ Kaczenski each turned in a 45 to cap off the team score of 176 for the Vikings.
Smith Vocational (6-6) rounds out its regular season on Wednesday at Forrest Park Country Club against McCann Tech. Franklin Tech (13-3) takes on Mohawk Trail at Country Club of Greenfield on Tuesday afternoon.


Turners 177, Mohawk Trail 179 — The Warriors were oh so close to their first win of the season, but the Thunder received strong performances from the depths of their lineup to squeak out a win.
Ethan Eichorn (41), Cam Cogswell (42), Liam Kerivan and Andrew Eichorn (47) were the scorers for Turners, while Conner Bergeron (40), Joei LaBelle (45), Sam Mizula (46) and Carl Jernstrom (48) scored for Mohawk Trail.
Athol 179, Pioneer 213 — It was a big day for the Bears, as they not only defeated the Panthers on their senior day at Ellinwood Country Club, they also secured a spot in the Western Mass. tournament with their ninth win of the season.
Ethan Heuer shot a match-best 38, Owen Stoddard carded a 42, Dominik St. Andre shot a 47 and Rafael Lopez rounded out the Athol scoring with a 52.
Pioneer was led by Chayton Massa’s 52, while Tucker Aldrich and Parker Gerry were close behind with 53s.
Frontier 153, Amherst 171 — Parker Cornelison’s eagle on the par-4 5th hole catapulted him to a round of 36 and the Redhawks to a win on Monday at Cherry Hill Golf Course.
Brady Wood, Addy Wood and Christian Powell all scored for Frontier, who qualified for the Western Mass. tournament at Chicopee Country Club with the win.
Girls soccer
St. Mary’s 2, Mahar 1 — Mackenzie Matthews’ nine saves kept the Senators in the game, but they couldn’t find an equalizer as they dropped a close one on Monday.
Lexi Ares scored the Mahar goal which was assisted by Addie Almeida.
Field hockey
Franklin Tech 1, Hampshire 0 — Abi Dobias scored a goal on a Teagan Donahue assist to propel the Eagles to a win on Monday afternoon.
Volleyball
Minnechaug 3, Frontier 0 — The Redhawks were unable to pick up a set against the Falcons on Monday evening, as they lost 25-17, 25-18, 25-14.
Avah Spearance had six kills and six digs, Morgan Mason put up a team-high four aces while Caitlin Maio recorded three aces and three kills. Maio and Kaelyn Johnson tied for a team-high in digs with seven.
