Madelynn Burgess racked up 16 aces and dished out 14 assists, and the Mahar girls volleyball team snagged their first win of the season with a 25-7, 25-21, 25-21 sweep of Pioneer in Western League action on Friday night in Orange.

Hayden Comeau led the offense with eight kills for Mahar (1-1), while Scarleth Aranda Lebron, Kamryn Hart and Burgess all put down three kills for the Sens.

Kiara Gruszkowski and Jacobia Tyminski had four aces apiece for Pioneer (1-1), while Sophia Wood dished out four assists to go with two blocks and two aces. Molly Gouin recorded three digs including a kick save to win a point from the back row.

Franklin Tech 3, Turners Falls 0 – The Eagles swept their crosstown rivals, as Jenna Petrowicz racked up seven kills, five aces, six digs and two blocks in a 25-22, 25-18, 31-29 win over the Thunder on Friday.

Lily Baldwin amassed four kills, 13 assists and three digs for Franklin Tech (2-0), while Sarah Beckwith went for eight kills, two aces and five digs.

Greenfield 3, Athol 1 – The Green Wave dropped the opening set but rallied from there, holding on for a 23-25, 25-15, 25-19, 25-28 Western League win on Friday night.

Athol’s Giana Vaillancourt notched six kills, six assists and four aces, while Ella Reed added four aces and two digs.

Longmeadow 3, Frontier 0 – Greta Hale’s five kills paced the Redhawks, which dropped a 25-10, 25-21, 25-15 sweep to the powerhouse Lancers on Friday.

Cadence Martin dished out nine assists and Caitlin Maio led the defense with 11 digs.

Boys soccer

Frontier 1, Chicopee Comp 0 – Xavier Fripp netted the game’s only goal for the Redhawks, scoring a second-half marker to help them move to 2-0 on the season thanks to Friday’s 1-0 Holley League win.

Girls soccer

Pioneer 5, Franklin Tech 1 – Maddie Keefe tallied just 48 seconds into the first half, setting the tone for a lopsided Panthers victory on Friday night in Turners Falls.

Jaelyn Boliski and Dzelila Cecunjanin followed with first-half strikes as Pioneer took a 3-0 lead into halftime.

Trailing 5-0 late, Tech freshman Faythe Sobieski buried a free kick from distance to break up the shutout.

Tech goalie Shayly Martin made two saves while Pioneer’s Kyler McClelland recorded four saves.

Smith Academy 2, Mahar 0 – Jaya McBroom and Bella Kimball combined to make five saves in net for the Senators, which dropped to 0-2 with a loss on the road in Hatfield on Friday.

Anna Scagel scored both goals for the Falcons.

Golf

Westfield Tech 168, Athol 170 – Ethan Heuer posted the low round of the day for the Bears, firing a 40, but Athol came up just short in a tight loss to Westfield Tech on Friday.

Owen Stoddard (41), Brandon Adams (49) and Dominik St. Andre (50) also factored into the scoring for Athol.

“A very competitive match just missed on our opportunities to score well,” Athol coach Brian Patria said.
