Medical oncologist joins Baystate Regional Cancer Program

SPRINGFIELD — Dr. Bryan Lee, who was trained in osteopathic medicine and specializes in cancer care, has joined the oncology medical staff at the Baystate Regional Cancer Program.

Lee provides specialized care in breast cancer; cancers of the digestive system, including esophagus, stomach and colon; and benign hematology blood conditions that impact bleeding and clotting.

Before coming to Baystate, Lee was an attending physician in the Hematology Oncology Department at Bassett Healthcare Network in Cooperstown, New York. He was also an active member of the Tumor Board Committee and medical oncology chair of the Cancer Care Committee. The Newton native earned his doctorate in osteopathic medicine from Nova Southeastern University in Davie, Florida.

“In the short time that Dr. Lee has been with our team, he has already established a reputation as an excellent communicator and compassionate physician,” Dr. Grace Makari-Judson, chief of Baystate Health’s Hematology-Oncology Division, said in a statement. “He has been praised by patients, staff and referring providers alike.”

Lee sees patients by referral at Baystate’s D’Amour Center for Cancer Care in Springfield and at Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield.

South Deerfield dentist named among ‘10 Under Ten’ by state society

SOUTH DEERFIELD — Dr. Justine Karanian, a general dentist practicing in South Deerfield, has been recognized by the Massachusetts Dental Society as one of the “10 Under Ten” for 2023.

Established in 2005 by the Massachusetts Dental Society, the annual recognition highlights the diversity of new dentists in Massachusetts and their impact on the dental profession. To qualify, dentists must have graduated from dental school within the past 10 years, be a Massachusetts Dental Society member, and have made significant contributions to the profession, their community and organized dentistry.

As a member of the Massachusetts Dental Society’s House of Delegates, Karanian said she has learned “the importance of district and state communications, and how we as a profession need to work together on both levels to accomplish specific goals and tasks that benefit members and our patients.”

The Northampton resident earned her doctorate in dentistry from Boston University’s Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine. She received her master’s degree in oral health sciences in 2011 from Boston University’s School of Medicine.

The “10 Under Ten” dentists are featured in the spring 2023 issue of the Journal of the Massachusetts Dental Society and were honored earlier this year at the 2023 Yankee Dental Congress. Yankee is New England’s largest dental meeting and is presented by the Massachusetts Dental Society in cooperation with the dental societies of Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont.
