Seven area basketball players will represent Franklin County during the WMass Championships of the Knights of Columbus Hoop Shoot Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle School in West Springfield.
Three girls will participate in the various age groups, which run from 9 through 14: Amber Bergeron, 10, of Greenfield; Emily Young, 11, of Turners Falls; and Desire Doane, 12, of New Salem.
Four area boys also qualified through the first two local rounds: Caleb Thomas, 9, of Turners Falls; Austin Sumner, 10, of Turners Falls; Tyler Podolski, 11, of Greenfield; and Xavier Santiago, 14, of Millers Falls.
The seven players will try to advance to the state tournament, which will be held at Nichols College in Dudley.
West County signups
The West County Baseball Association will hold registrations for its various baseball teams Saturday from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Mohawk Trail Regional High School in Buckland.
Here’s a look at each team/league:
Cal Ripken: Open to players ages 5 through 12 in the Mohawk Youth Baseball League. Teams are in Buckland/Shelburne, Ashfield, Colrain, Rowe, Charlemont and Chesterfield. Season runs from April 25 until June 11.
Babe Ruth: Open to players 13 through 15 years old and will play in the Franklin County Babe Ruth Baseball League in Greenfield. Games will be played at Mohawk and Abercrombie Field in Greenfield. Regular season is 12-14 games long with a playoff, and season runs from May 7 through the end of June. Games will only take place on weekends through the end of school. Players must be 15 as of April 30.
Mickey Mantle: Open to players 15 and 16 playing in the Pioneer Valley Youth baseball League. Homes games will be at Mohawk, and away games will take place in the Pioneer Valley. The regular season is 12 to 14 games with a playoff. Season runs from June 4 until the end of July.
Players must by 16 as of June 1.
GML registrations
The Greenfield Minor League will hold registrations for the 2016 season in the Community Room at the Greenfield Police Station on High Street on Saturday (5:30 to 8 p.m.) and Sunday (10 a.m. to noon).
All players, including returning players, must register. Cost is $75 per player with a $10 sibling discount, and financial assistance is available.
Parents should bring a birth certificate to registrations, and evaluations will take place on April 2 from 8 to 11 a.m. at Lunt Field in Greenfield (weather permitting) or Indoor Action Sports in Greenfield.
There will also be three baseball clinics for all registered players on March 28, March 30 and April 1 at Lunt Field from 5 p.m. until dusk.

GGSL sign-ups
Registration sessions for the Greenfield Girls’ Softball League will take place on March 5, 12 and 19 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Greenfield Elks Lodge on Church Street.
The league is open all girls ages 5 through 16 and includes T-ball, Little Nipper, Ponytaill and Senior divisions.
Registrations for the Greenfield Grizzlies 12- and 14-and-under Suburban teams and the Franklin County Crush 10- and 12-and-under tournament teams will also be taken at each session.
