Trevor Kuchieski buried the game-winning goal with seven minutes remaining and the Liberty Tax Service FCHA Bantam hockey team edged Ludlow, 3-2, in a Greater Springfield League 14U North Division contest on Sunday at Collins-Moylan Arena in Greenfield.
Will Miskovich and Jayson Smith picked up assists on Kuchieski’s tally. Smith and Matt Lavoine also scored in the win, while Hunter Smith and Miskovich had two assists each and Eathon Bryant added a helper. Will Cowie finished with 25 saves in net.
On Saturday, the team fell to Ludlow, 8-6, at Smead Arena in Springfield.
Lavoine has three goals and an assist, while Kuchieski (two goals, assist), Hunter Smith (goal, assist), Bryant (two assists), Miskovich (two assists) and Dylan Archer (assist) also contributed offensively. Cowie made 28 saves.
Greenfield SL wins
Gavin Arsenault poured in 16 points and Grayson Thomas added 10 points to lift Greenfield past Pioneer, 36-20, in a Suburban League grades 5 and 6 boys basketball game on Saturday.
Levi Dunn and Phil Ragland each had 4 points for Greenfield, while Jackson Glazier and Connor Woodward had 5 points apiece for Pioneer.
Turners dominates
The Turners Falls Grades 5 and 6 Suburban League team sponsored by St. Stanislaus Society picked up a 64-31 win over Tantasqua on Sunday at Turners Falls High School.
Danny Widmer led the way with 20 points and Brody Girard added 16 points in the win. Mike Cyhowski scored seven points and Colin Broderick and Jacob Gould each had six points for Turners.
Pioneer sweeps
The Pioneer Grades 7 and 8 basketball team swept a trio of games over the weekend.
On Sunday, the club picked up a 47-41 win over Tantasqua in Brimfield, as Brayden Thayer scored 13 points while Josh Wood (12 points) and Kurt Redeker (10) joined him in double figures.
On Saturday, Pioneer stormed out to a 31-13 halftime lead and held on to defeat Greenfield, 54-47.
Wood had 22 points in the win and Redeker added 11. Jonathan Breor and Jackson Campbell scored 11 points apiece for Greenfield.
Wood also scored 17 to help Pioneer beat South Hadley, 49-39, on Friday. Gavin Gammell tossed in 12 points.
Jarod Harrington buried two goals, including an empty-netter to seal the deal as Deerfield Academy picked up a 4-2 victory over rival Choate Rosemary Hall on Saturday in NEPSAC boys hockey action in Deerfield.
Eamon Doheny and Drew Garzone also scored to help the Big Green (1-2-1) nab their first win of the seas on. Alex Robert and Kyle Jarosz notched assists in the victory. DA fell to Avon Old Farms, 4-0, on Sunday.
• Elsewhere, the DA girls basketball team won its season opener with a 65-56 victory over St. Paul’s School on Saturday.
The boys basketball team held visiting Westminster to just 13 points in the second half on Saturday but ultimately fell, 58-50. The Big Green bounced back on Sunday, upending MacDuffie, 54-41, as part of the Pioneer Valley Tip-Off at UMass’ Curry Hicks Cage in Amherst.
The wrestling team went 2-1 in a quad at Worcester Academy, beating Worcester and Choate while falling to Belmont Hill. The g irls hockey team was blanked by Buckingham Browne & Nichols, 5-0.
The UMass women’s basketball team picked up its fifth straight win with a 61-55 triumph over Siena on Sunday at the Mullins Center. The Minutewomen improved to 8-3 on the season, giving the pro gram its first five-game winning streak since the 2015-16 season.
Senior Hailey Leidel recorded a game-high 19 points and was joined in double figures with 10 apiece from sophomore Destiney Philoxy and freshman Maeve Donnelly. Donnelly added eight rebounds and six blocks, and Philoxy’s five assists were all game-highs as well.
