Greenfield 7, Southwick 1 — Doug Hanieski and the rest of the Greenfield High School seniors celebrated Senior Night in style.
Hanieski scored two goals and assisted on two others as the Green Wave locked up no worse than a second-place finish in the Wright Division with a 7-1 victory over Southwick at Collins-Moylan Arena in Greenfield.
Greenfield (15-2-2 overall, 7-1-2 Wright) moved into first place, one point ahead of Belchertown, which the Green Wave knocked off on Friday afternoon to set the stage for the Wave to get a chance to win the league title. The Orioles (11-3-2, 7-1-1) head to third-place Easthampton on Wednesday for their Wright-Division finale. If the Eagles knock off the Orioles, the Green Wave would win the league outright, while a tie would give Greenfield a share of the title.
The Green Wave took care of business against a Southwick (2-15-1) team that is finishing up its first season as a varsity program. The Rams came into the game on a three-game (2-0-1) unbeaten streak.
“You look at that Southwick team, and they’ve come a long way in their first season,” Greenfield coach Adam Bouchard said. “Two-thirds of the way through the first period, it was a 0-0 game.”
Greenfield struck for a pair of goals in the final 3 minutes, 30 seconds of the first period to take control. Bryan Baumann struck for a pair of goals to get his team headed in the right direction.
“It kind of deflated Southwick a little bit,” Bouchard said.
Greenfield added two more in the second before Southwick got on the board for its lone goal. The Green Wave led 5-1 after two periods and scored twice in the third.
“After that one breakdown when Southwick scored, we really picked it back up to where we needed to be,” Bouchard said. “The discussions we are having is that every game needs to be played like a playoff atmosphere moving forward. The place was rocking.”
Baumann finished with two goals and three assists in the win, while Cameron Rice, Matt Wilhite and Aidan Roche each scored in the victory. Mike McGoldrick had a pair of assists, and senior Aurel Pydych added one helper. Riley Drew made 18 saves for the victory in net. Noah Jubb scored on an assist from Noah Durfey for the lone Southwick goal. Andrew Morris made 34 saves in the loss.
The game was the final for Hanieski, Pydych, Devin Carty, Kyle Devlin, Connor Clough and Zach Smith.
Greenfield wraps up the regular season this evening at 5:30 at Collins-Moylan Arena against Berry Division-foe Ludlow High School. The postseason seeds will then be released on Saturday as Greenfield looks for a high seed in the WMass Division 3A Tournament.
