Michael Townsley of Bernardston paced the field of 500 runners across the finish line at the Kringle Candle Chase 5K race Sunday morning in Bernardston.
Townsley completed the race in 19 minutes, 9 seconds to keep the title in the hometown of the event. Pioneer Valley Regional School’s Dana McRae of Warwick finished nine seconds back in second place in a time of 19:18.
The race was packed with youngsters on account of the Jill E. Harrington Hanzalik Foundation, giving each youth team that competed not only free entry but also a grant.
South Hadley’s Matthew O’Brien placed third at 19:43, and teammate Jacob Broyless was fourth in 20:16. Dakota Faille of Northfield was fifth in 20:22, and Greenfield’s Owen Phelps was sixth in 20:33. Chase Michaud of Athol was seventh in 20:35, Robert Davis of Vernon, Vt., was eighth in 20:37, Jeremy Roussel of Greenfield was ninth in 20:50, and Edward Appel of Leverett was 10th in 20:56.
Savannah Gates of Vernon, Vt., was the top female finisher in 22:34. Nicole Fahey of Turners Falls was second in 23:24, and Sarah Mailloux of Southampton was third in 23:30. Katie Haselton of Greenfield was fourth in 24:10, and Paige Sulda of Montague was fifth in 24:11.
Don Maynard results
Jeff Levrault of South Hadley crossed the line in 30:39 to win the Don Maynard Memorial 5-Mile Road Race Saturday morning in Greenfield.
Bob Bezio of Erving came in second in 31:05, and Jason Arble of Holyoke was third in 32:17. Craig Reed of Westfield took fourth in 32:20, and Brian Pickell of Leverett was fifth in 32:55. Rounding out the top 10 was Conway’s Ron Boyden in sixth (32:56), Buckland’s Sri Bodkhe in seventh (33:18), Ashfield’s Brandon Osman in eighth (33:52), Conway’s Mike Barlow in ninth (34:12), and Jay Seney of Vernon, Conn. in 10th (34:16).
South Deerfield’s JoEllen Reino was the top female finisher, placing 14th overall in 35:48, while Paulina Baltzer of Shelburne was second in 37:12. Sarah Nelson of Florence was third in 37:47, Erin Cassidy of Northampton was fourth in 38:17, and Bosilijka Glumac of Florence was fifth in 42:13.
Frontier Peewees win
Teddy Cyr and Garrett Dredge each scored touchdowns Sunday and the defense made it stand up as Frontier defeated Ware, 14-0, in a Suburban League Peewee Division football game in Ware.
Landon Clark led the Hawks’ rushing attack with 53 yards, while Lawson Landmark had 33. Cyr rushed for 19 yards, Ryan Payeur rushed for 10 yards, Konnor James rushed for 8 yards and a 2-point conversion, and Dredge rushed for 7 yards and the touchdown.
Landmark paced the defense with seven tackles, while Harry LaFlamme had six tackles, including a sack. Levi Pickert made four tackles, Jack Phillips had two tackles, including a sack, and Matthew Telega, Rowan Jeffress and Kodey Camp had two tackles. Cyr, Dredge, James, Payeur, RJ Kaczenski, Braiden Dion, Zach Haskell and Angel Ruiz Scott each made one tackle.
Junior Bulldogs win
Joseph White rushed for 86 yards and three touchdowns Sunday and the Franklin County Bulldogs defeated defeated Quabbin, 24-0, in a SL Junior Division football game at Benjamin Roach Field in Hardwick.
Tyler Yetter, Brayden Arsenault and Vincent Renauld each rushed in 2-point conversions. The Bulldogs rushed for 208 yards as a team. Yetter added 47 rushing yards and also had a 35-yard interception return to set up a touchdown. Renauld added 40 yards and Cam Laster rushed for 20.
White forced a fumble and made four tackles. Hugh Cyhowski made nine tackles, while Ryan Grace (one sack), David Damkoehler and Renauld each made five tackles. Avery added four tackles, and Yetter and Eli Dresser had three tackles apiece. Gabe Tomasi, William Ainsworth, Brayden Arsenault and London Washington made two tackles apiece, and Oliver Postera and Alex Knapp each had one tackle.
Frontier Juniors win
Frontier’s defense pitched its second straight shutout en route to a 30-0 win over Ware in a SL Junior Division football game Sunday in Ware.
Four players scored in the win. No names were reported.
Cross country
Richard Sturtevant from Northfield Mount Hermon School won the Brush Cross Country Invitational at Deerfield Academy on Saturday.
The Leyden native finished the race in a time of 16:45. Will McNamara of Deerfield was third overall, while teammates JJ Siritantikorn was sixth and Marco Marsans was seventh.
In the Grades 9 and 10 race, Declan Cullinane and Charlie Lewis of Deerfield came in first and second, while Hayden McGuinness and Jake Meier were fourth and fifth. Thomas Lyons took seventh.
Volleyball
Deerfield opened the girls’ prep volleyball season with a pair of victories during the Deerfield Tri on Saturday.
The Big Green defeated Milton Academy, 3-0, and also beat Miss Porter’s School, 3-2.
Soccer
Brenna Hoar scored a pair of goals in the second half and assisted on another goal as Deerfield rebounded from a 3-0 deficit at halftime to tie Milton, 3-3, in a girls’ prep soccer match on Saturday.
• In boys’ action, Alex Platt and Nolan Zusi each scored twice as Deerfield dumped Salisbury School, 4-1, Saturday in Deerfield.
Field hockey
Ali Fujiyoshi scored the only goal of the game on Saturday and Deerfield defeated Berkshire School, 1-0, in a prep field hockey game in Sheffield.
Water polo
Deerfield opened the 2017 water polo season by splitting a pair of matches at the Choate Rosemary Hall Quad Saturday in Wallingford, Conn.
Deerfield defeated Choate, 12-7, and suffered a 17-2 loss to Brunswick School.
Football
Deerfield traveled to Lawrenceville, N.J. on Saturday and opened the season with a 23-6 victory over Lawrenceville School.
FC Gray splits
Dalton Henderson doubled and drove in two runs on Sunday to lead Franklin County Gray to a 9-5 win over Westfield Blue in a Babe Ruth Fall Baseball League game at Jachym Field in Westfield.
James Robison had two doubles and an RBI in the win, and Kolby Watroba and Tyler Cusson each had two hits. Corbin Leh and Zack Damon each had a single and an RBI. Robison, Jake Lyons and Nate Sciandra combined on 10 strikeouts in the win.
• On Saturday, Robison had two hits, and Henderson doubled and drove in a run but Franklin County Gray suffered a 10-6 loss to Longmeadow at Abercrombie Field in Greenfield.
Sciandra, Leh and Miles Ferreira each singled and drove in a run, and Watroba had one hit.
FC Green falls
Cayden Lehtomaki had two doubles and two RBIs over the weekend but Franklin County Green suffered a 12-4 loss to Westfield Orange in a Babe Ruth Fall League game.
Joe Boyden, Charlie Boyden and Gillis MacDougal each had a hit in the loss.
Valley Storm wins
Amanda Fuller singled home Emily Young with the walk-off run as the Valley Storm defeated Easthampton, 3-2, in a 16U Fall Softball League game Sunday at Nonotuck Park in Easthampton.
Alley Markowski singled to get on base before Young pinch-ran for her en route to the game-winning run. Kelsey Richardson had a hit and two runs scored for Valley Storm, and Kathryn Hioe singled and drove in a run.
Courtney Dunham struck out five to earn the win and also had a hit.
September Shotgun
Terry Blanchard, Wendy Blanchard, Mike Larabee, Bob Lively and Bill Caines shot a 56 to win the 200 Club September Shotgun Saturday at the Country Club of Greenfield.
Tom Bresciano, Jen Bresciano, Brodie Conant, Sandy Conant, Bob Provost and Jess Provost came in second with a 57. Mike Duclos, Karen Duclos, Roy Emerson, TC Emerson, Liz Dolby and Tony Wonseski tied Tom Bergeron, Bill Canon, John Canon, Phyllis Canon, Rick Sigda and Sue Sigda for third with a 58.
