Brie Widelo struck out 10 over four innings and the Greenfield Grizzlies improved to 2-0 on the young season with a convincing 18-3 win over West Springfield in a Suburban Softball League 12-and-under contest Monday night at Mittineague Park in West Springfield.
Widelo combined with Kameryn Dearborn to hold down West Side. Dearborn struck out three in one inning of work and added two hits and three RBI at the plate. Widelo also had a double.
Alysia Knapp smacked two hits, including a double, and stole five bases in a busy night for the Grizzlies, while Faith Smith had three hits and two RBI and Mackenzie Paulin also had a hit.
Greenfield returns to action Wednesday when it travels to Southampton to play the SoHo Heat.
• Elsewhere, Julia Hioe struck out 11 batters to lift Frontier Red past Frontier Blue, 8-5, in 12-and-under action Monday at Merritt Field in Sunderland.
Gabby Frangie had two hits and drove in a pair of runs for Frontier Red, while Tia Gottschalk (hit, two RBI) and Madison McKimmie (two hits, two RBI) also aided the offense.
Jillian Apanell struck out 12 batters in the circle for Frontier Blue, and she added two hits at the plate, including an RBI double. Kylie Laford singled and drove in a run for her team.
Mark K. Memorial
Gene LaCoy, Jim Fowler, Norm Cousineau, Dave McCarthy and Linda Bovat teamed for a 58, putting them atop the leaderboard in action Monday at the Mark K. Memorial Mixed League at Oak Ridge Golf Club in Gill.
George Hall, Sally Malloy, Al Blanchard Sr. and John Rutka were next, taking second place with a round of 60.
The halfway party for the Monday Night League will be held on July 9, with hamburgers and hot dogs served at the course from noon to 4 p.m.
CC of G Women’s
Sue Plante’s 27 put her atop the tournament Monday in the A Division, as the Women’s League at the Country Club of Greenfield played an ‘Odd holes’ format through No. 11.
Tilly Clark’s 44 gave her low-gross honors, while Margo Worden took low net in the A Division with a 37.
Tami Gaylor’s 30 put her atop the B Division, while Michelle Hazlett nabbed low-gross honors with a 45 and Elaine Mount won a match of cards for a low-net score of 35.
In C Division action, Donna Mowry’s 33 sealed the win. Angie Bergquist (53) held low-gross honors while Mo Barkley won a match of cards to earn the low net tally with a 37.
EDGE Golf Tournament
The EDGE Basketball Club will hold its annual EDGE Golf Tournament on Sept. 16 at the Northfield Golf Club.
The tournament is a 9 a.m. shotgun start and costs $260 per team.

Greenfield Co-Rec
Mike Cormie finished a perfect 5-for-5 at the dish, powering the Outlaws to a 20-18 win over Hubie’s Tavern in a Greenfield Co-Rec Adult Softball League game Monday night at Green River Park No. 1.
Maura Crossman was 4-for-5 in the tight win for the Outlaws, while Zeb Crossman was 3-for-5.
Hubie’s was led by Brian Ginnity, who hit for the cycle with five RBI. Justin Nash had four hits and Kelly Smith added three hits.
Sandy Koufax
Tyler Dubrule went 2-for-4 with a double and a stolen base but Mohawk Hubie’s Tavern found itself on the wrong end of a 7-6 loss to Amherst in a Pioneer Valley Youth Baseball League Sandy Koufax game Monday night.
Sean Davenport had a hit and drove in two runs for Mohawk Hubie’s, while Nick Boesel-Stravino was 2-for-3 and Jaden Moore added a hit and an RBI.
Cullen Brown tossed three no-hit innings out of the gate for Mohawk, but suffered the loss after Amherst scored five runs on just two hits against him. Brown struck out four and walked six in four-plus innings.
Mohawk is in action on Thursday when it travels to play Dalton at Pine Grove Park in Dalton (5:30).
DRIVE Men’s
Angelo Thomas poured in 27 points and Ben Barshefsky added 21 to send Team DRIVE to an 86-70 win over Keene in a DRIVE Men’s Basketball League game Sunday at Pioneer Valley Regional School.
Dave Sontag led Keene with a team-high 15 points in the loss.
• Elsewhere, Chris Brown’s 41 points helped VT Nameless to a 104-82 victory over Freedom Credit Union.
Ethan Slavin was also in double figures with 14 points for VT.
Eli Lombardi’s 43 points powered Freedom Credit Union, while Connor Joy tossed in 11.
• In other action, Nick Seretta and Xavier Cruz combined for 51 points as Snow & Son’s Landscaping waxed Bruso Computer Solutions, 94-71.
Matt Gibson’s 24 points topped Bruso’s roster, while Jalen Sanders added 13.
• Also, behind 35 points from Tim Cooley and 24 points from Chris Fitzgerald, Future’s Unlimited upended Functional Fitness, 87-54.
Brett Swanson had 14 points in the loss for Functional Fitness.
• Finally, Liam Ellis registered 23 points and Malcolm Smith chipped in 12 as Taylor’s Tavern breezed past the Mohawks, 75-35.
Alex Decoschake and Jake Cross scored 12 points apiece for the Mohawks.
Franklin County clinic
The 20th annual Franklin County Hoop Clinic sponsored by DRIVE Hoops will take place from July 17 through 21 at Greenfield High School.
The clinic will run daily from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. and is open to boys and girls ages 6 through 14. Cost is $150 per participant and includes breakfast and lunch.
The clinic, which will be limited to the first 60 participants, will be run by Hopkins Academy boys’ varsity basketball coach Angelo Thomas and Greenfield High School girls’ varsity basketball coach John Hickey.

Montague Mug Race
The 37th annual Montague Mug Race is scheduled for Aug. 19, with the 5.5-mile road race “blasting” off at 8:30 a.m. from the Village Common.
Pewter Mugs are awarded to top male and female finishers, and coffee mugs will go to top finishers of each division. T-shirts are given to the first 90 runners. The course is well marked with plenty of water stops, and features a few challenging hills with a run along the Connecticut River.
Now in its 13th year, the Mini Mug Race will kick off at 8:35 a.m. This course measures two miles and is a great scenic route around the Old South Cemetery. Both races will finish at the ball field. All runners are entered into drawing for local prizes.
