If Greenfield High School’s postseason drive falls just short, Monday’s game could be wind up being the key moment where it got away.

Chicopee Comprehensive High School caught a huge late break and scored with 1.8 seconds left in regulation to forge a 2-2 draw with the Green Wave in a Fay-Wright Division hockey contest Monday afternoon at Fitzpatrick Arena in Holyoke.

Greenfield (4-5-2 overall, 2-4-1 Fay-Wright) had taken a 2-1 lead with just 3:19 remaining in the contest when Evan Simmons stole the puck, beat a defender one-on-one at the blue line and scored on Colts goaltender Kyle Vezina.

Comp then got the break it was hoping for when the Green Wave’s Sarah O’Sullivan was called for a questionable interference penalty with 1:09 left.

“They were letting everything go and then they called that (penalty), on what I thought was a good defensive play,” said Greenfield head coach Adam Bouchard.

The Colts immediately pulled Vezina to create a 6-on-4 situation. Greenfield won a faceoff in the waning moments, but Tyler Townsley’s clearing attempt was stopped by Comp’s Dexter Labonte near the blue line. Labonte took a slap shot that bounced twice, but Derek Boutin reached and tipped the disc past Green Wave goalie Riley Drew for the equalizer.

“This is one that definitely slipped away from us,” lamented Bouchard. “We outshot them and were all over them offensively.

“Earlier in the year, we had been clicking on offense, but our defense was a little suspect. Now, the defense is playing well but the offense has started to sputter. If we can learn how to finish, things will be different. We’ve gotta finish more often. That’s what it comes down to.”

Comp (2-6-2, 1-5-2 F-W) had scored first at the 10:27 mark of the opening period, when Carter Brunelle struck for a tally with helpers from Boutin and Garrett Riopelli.

Greenfield tied it at 4:57 of the middle frame when Zack Geyster received a pass from Sean O’Sullivan and ripped a blast from the top of right face off circle and past Vezina’s stick side.

Greenfield finished with a 31-26 shot advantage. Drew kicked out 24 while Vezina was credited with 29 saves.

“The pressure continues to build to bring this team to the playoffs,” offered Bouchard. “We’ve got to look beyond this. We have nine games left and need to win five (to qualify).”

Greenfield will try to get back in the win column when it faces St. Mary’s Parish School tonight at 8:30 at Amelia Park Arena in Westfield.
