ATHOL — An unidentified 23-year-old man from Athol was airlifted via medical helicopter to a Worcester hospital early Wednesday morning after being struck by a car on South Main Street.
“The subject, who wasn’t identified at the scene, was LifeFlighted to UMass Medical Center, where I understand he’s still in serious condition,” said Athol Police Lt. Kevin Heath Thursday. The man, Heath said, was walking in the middle of the travel lane of Route 2A around 4:55 a.m. when the accident happened.
Heath said the road was dark at the time, and the events surrounding the accident are still under investigation — he noted that a preliminary investigation about the accident suggest there “wasn’t any excessive speed” or alcohol involved.
According to Heath, the accident is still under investigation.
A statement released by Northwestern District Attorney’s Office relates that “the vehicle struck the man on an unlighted portion of South Main Street near the intersection with Roosevelt Road.”
Athol Fire Department and state police officers were also at the scene. State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction team and Crime Scene Services are currently investigating. Heath noted there doesn’t seem to be foul play involved. The DA’s statement related that “no charges have been filed at this time.”
