GREENFIELD — Weather permitting, the town will begin street sweeping the first week of April. This year’s contract has been awarded to BDM Sweeper Service of Keene, N.H., according to the Department of Public Works.
Because winter operations used only salt and no sand this year, it will not be necessary to sweep all roadways, and the contractor will focus on downtown area due to litter and debris there. The residential street sweeping is expected to be finished in two to three weeks, according to the release.
Parking lots and downtown will be swept at night while the remainder of the sweeping will be done during the day. In addition to the spring sweeping, the downtown business district will be swept every two weeks or as needed. Business owners are legally responsibile for sweeping and keeping their sidewalks clean. Litter should be picked up and not swept into the street, said the DPW.
Residents are asked to avoid parking on theire residential streets during daylight hours until after their street it swept and not to sweep sand into piles as the sweeper does a better job when it is not consolidated. Homeowners who wish to pick up sand can bring it to the Transfer Station free of charge, but are asked to not place it in the trash, according to the release.
Water will be used for dust control. However, a small amount of dust is unavoidable, the DPW warned. Those with questions or concerns should call 413-772-1528, ext. 6100.
