I am writing in response to Michelle Kretzer of Norfolk, Va., in reference to the Orange teenager who was seriously injured in a hunting accident.

Ms. Kretzer’s letter was vile, insensitive, and ignorant.

I am not a hunter, but I have many friends who are for a variety of reasons. Many depend on hunting and fishing to feed their families. God put animals on the earth and gave man dominion over them for a reason. Hunting and fishing is regulated and managed not only for the sportsmen but also for the health of the animals. If hunters didn’t take the quota from the animal population, a great number of them would starve to death. Would you prefer that? If humans didn’t eat animals, a huge number of humans would starve.

Your callous and short-sighted rant was disgusting given what this young man and his family are going through. This entire family are all good citizens of Orange and deserve everybody’s support and respect.

Maybe in your fantasy world hamburgers grow on trees, but in the rest of the world animals die to feed humans.
