Going by past years, the top three major league baseball clubs that aren’t division winners in the American League win between 89 and 92 games (in the new format the top three non-division winners receive wild card berths). Going into the All-Star break the Boston Red Sox were playing .516 baseball at 48-45. They would, arguably, need to play .609 baseball (42-27) to attain a wild card berth the rest of the way. A complete turnaround of that magnitude from a team decimated by injuries and appearing to be in turmoil would be improbable and has some of their fans wanting them to, in effect, throw in the towel, sell off and/or trade players to cut payroll to begin preparing for 2023, while others want them to stay the course and go for a playoff berth believing this group can go on a big second half run, although at this point it would take a minor miracle, akin to what the 1914 Boston Miracle Braves did.
