The Saturday, March 12, front-page story “Students walk out in protest of anti-LGBTQ legislation” featuring two girls draped in rainbow colored sheets was inappropriate and a waste of valuable classroom time. It was inspired and largely orchestrated by faculty and staff guilty of manipulating the young minds they are entrusted to protect and to nurture.
Last I knew America ranked somewhere between 100 and 150 on the international list of educational systems in terms of comprehension and mathematical scores. Clearly, the Mohawk walk out was not part of the established curriculum; it was a disruptive act that interfered with the classes as usual. It would therefore seem that these two students should have been reprimanded and their faculty mentors and puppeteers disciplined or summarily fired from the school district. It’s time to take a stand and to right this runaway train we call public education.
