COLRAIN — The Colrain Police Department is working to minimize the number of vehicles parking along the Green River.
The department took to social media to explain it has received many complaints about people parking on private land and on beaches owned by state or federal fish and wildlife services. A recent Facebook post thanked everyone who posted “No Trespassing” signs on their property, as this has been helpful to the department. Over the June 27 weekend, some vehicles were towed for parking in “No Parking” areas.
“We hope this will spread the word to other guests who plan on coming to the river in the future, to keep them from parking where they are not supposed to as well as keep our beaches clean,” the Facebook post reads.
The Police Department mentioned it is important to note the Green River is not closed. The water is not private property, however, you cannot access the water via private property unless you have permission from the property owners. The majority of the popular swimming areas and beaches are owned by private residents.
“You still may see vehicles parked there,” the post reads. “The landowners have given some people permission to be on (their) land.”
