WENDELL — It’s National Take a Hike Day on Sunday, and a group of activists is inviting the public to walk around in and learn about Wendell State Forest.

The Wendell State Forest Alliance, which unsuccessfully battled the state’s Department of Conservation and Recreation this past year in a bid to halt the logging of an 80-acre old oak stand, is holding a walk Sunday at 1 p.m.

Walkers will meet at the Carlton Road entrance to the Wendell State Forest — also called Marshes Road on Google Maps — off Montague Road in Wendell.

According to a Wendell State Forest Alliance press release, the hike will be a 1.1-mile roundtrip through the Brook Road section of the state forest, near where logging took place this fall. Organizers describe the trail as a “gently rolling woods road.”

Halfway through the walk, group member Bill Stubblefield will give a short presentation on the Wendell State Forest Alliance’s “Ghost Forest” project, which is meant to memorialize the area of forest that was logged.

Maps and more information will be provided at the meet-up point. Following the initial hike, an optional 4-mile hike will be led by Wendell State Forest Alliance members.
