SUNDERLAND — “I picture myself doing lots of traveling and a lot of good,” said Meghan Slocombe, who graduated from Frontier Regional School this month, about where she sees herself in the future.

Slocombe is a recipient of The Recorder scholarship, which recognizes students who have expressed interest in the journalism and photojournalism fields. She intends to commute from her home in Sunderland to Greenfield Community College before transferring to Smith College, where she plans to study either international and global affairs or journalism.

Recipients of the scholarship must be top academic performers — like Slocombe, who has a grade point average higher than 4.0. Last November, she received the Superintendent Award for academic excellence, volunteering and community participation.

Along with $250 scholarship, Slocombe, who played soccer, threw the discus and javelin and participated in a few different clubs (including Best Buddies and the comedy troupe For Real Entertainment Duh, or FRED) while at Frontier Regional, also received the Abigail Adams and South Deerfield Women’s Club scholarships.

Last year, along with her brother, Max, she backpacked through Europe for a few weeks. The brother and sister duo traveled through Germany, Italy, Switzerland and The Netherlands, stopping at Amsterdam.

“We went with (a little bit of) money and some clothes,” she said, adding that they could only afford to travel by bus. “It was a great experience.”

Slocombe said she’ll work at Working K9 Services in Vermont over the summer, where she walks and takes care of dogs, to save up for college. She’s also already taking a few courses at GCC online. Eventually, she’d like to work in either journalism or for a nonprofit organization.
