The Senators blanked the Red Raiders, 6-0, in the Pioneer North contest.

Mahar scored first on a goal by Isabella Zani at 34 minutes, 18 seconds of the first half and went into the intermission leading Athol 4-0.

Micalyn Mailloux had a breakout game with three goals and an assist for the Senators.

Delaney Parker started her season strongly as well, with two goals and two assists for the Senators.

MaryAnne Prescott picked up an assist on Mailloux’s first goal.

Mohawk boys soccer makes return to pitch

In its first game after re-establishing a boys soccer program, Mohawk fell to Hopkins, 4-0.

The Golden Hawks scored the lone goal of the first half, before jumping out and scoring three in the second half.

Reuben Bassett had 16 saves in net for the Warriors.

While Mohawk didn’t get the results it wanted, first-year coach Nick Brown saw some encouraging signs.

“We identified some areas that need some work yet overall looked solid,” Brown said. “The first half looked really good.”

Green Wave get back on track

After dropping its first game of the season, the Greenfield field hockey team found the win column on Thursday, defeating South Hadley, 4-1, in a Valley League game in South Hadley.

In its opening game against Agawam, Greenfield had more shots and corners, but was unable to capitalize on the plethora of opportunities.

Against the Tigers, the Green Wave were able to find the back of the cage often to earn the win.

“We played very well today,” Greenfield coach Erin Thayer said. “We had a bunch of breakaways, we didn’t score but had some. We just did a lot of things right today. We started to find our groove that we’ve been searching for.”

Freshman Lillia Kachelmeyer got the scoring started for the Green Wave, scoring the lone goal of the first half for either team.

While the opportunities were there in the first half, Greenfield converted in the second.

Kachelmeyer scored her second of the game, followed by goals from Mady Kuchieski and Amber Taylor.

Kuchieski, Katie Haselton and Kayla Eggsware picked up assists in the contest.

Thayer was impressed with her offense, but feels there is still room to improve.

“Today we finished,” Thayer said. “We had a lot of corners again. 14 corners, didn’t score of any of them.”

Red Hawks shutout Thunder

The Frontier girls volleyball team continued its strong start to the season Thursday, defeating Turners Falls, 3-0, in an independent game played at Frontier.

The Red Hawks started early, winning the first set 25-11, then taking the second set, 25-13.

In the third set, Frontier dominated 25-5 to seal the victory, with Olivia Simoneaux going on a nine point service run to nearly close out the match.

Olivia Deane had 11 of the Red Hawks 21 kills, with Jalen Sullivan (3), Jillian Appanell (2) each having multi-kill games.

Olivia Rosewarne had a kill and added nine assists while Lilah Evans, Kimani Topolski, Olivia Simoneaux and Abbe Roberts each added a kill of their own.

Sydney Scanlon was the Frontier leader in assists with 10, and libero Reilly Isler finished with six digs.

Siomara Green had eight saves in net for the Red Hawks.

“He was playing well out there,” Bill Fitzpatrick. “Almost birdied to shoot even par on the last hole.”
