GREENFIELD — Greenfield Community College President Dr. Yves Salomon-Fernandez is keeping herself busy these days — not only does she head up the college as its 10th president, but she has joined the board of directors of the New England Learning Center for Women in Transition (NELCWIT).

“The members of NELCWIT’s board of directors are thrilled that Dr. Salomon-Fernandez has agreed to join us in this important work,” said board President Pam Brown. “We know that she will contribute in many ways, helping NELCWIT to continue our work to create safety for all in our community.”

Salomon-Fernandez said, “The work that NELCWIT does is very close to my heart and speaks to empowering people in situations that I have found myself in more than once in my lifetime. I’m delighted to be able to join this very dedicated board and to help support the staff in advancing the mission.”

NELCWIT was founded in 1976 and is the region’s sexual and domestic violence crisis center, serving survivors of every race, gender, class and background. All survivor services are provided free of charge, and are offered in English and Spanish — a multi-language interpreter program is available for other languages.

All of NELCWIT’s sites are accessible. It is also known for its 24-hour crisis hotline, and its services include counseling, courtroom and other advocacy and educational programs geared to preventing sexual and domestic violence.

It offers both scheduled appointments and walk-in appointments Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. at 479 Main St.

The board consists of community members who represent various social and cultural groups, professions, life experiences and backgrounds. NELCWIT says it aspires to maintain a “robust board of directors that reflects the diversity of our staff and the communities we serve.”

“I hope that I can contribute to removing the stigma associated with needing help and to supporting survivors to reach their full potential as people for themselves and for our communities,” Salomon-Fernandez said.
