CONWAY — Residents voted to keep the town clerk position an elected one Thursday, rejecting a proposal to make it an appointed role.

Residents voted 211-160 against the first ballot question in this year’s election. Virginia A. Knowlton, a 36-year veteran of the town clerk’s office, defeated incumbent Sheila M. Harrington, 248-131, with 26 blank ballots.

Voters also opted to exempt the town from the provisions of Proposition 2½, ratifying their decision at town meeting to borrow of money for a new pumper truck for the Fire Department 236-143.
