Several brush fires ignited in Franklin County this weekend, police said.
On Sunday afternoon Montague Police and Fire Departments were investigating a brush fire that ravaged close to half an acre of wooded property behind Turners Falls High School on Friday, Captain Kyle Cogswell said.
Firefighters spent almost an hour battling the blaze.
On Saturday night another small brush fire broke out in Turners Falls on Power Street by the abandoned building known as the Railroad Salvage, Cogswell said.
Authorities believe the fire started with the careless disposal of a cigarette.
Another brush fire lit up about a quarter of an acre in Orange on Sunday at Bartlett Lane, said Fire Capt. Mark Fortier. Firefighters put out the blaze within 30 minutes.
A dispatcher from the Shelburne State Police confirmed another brush fire in Charlemont on Sunday.
