I am 13 years old, going into eighth grade at Four Rivers Charter Public School. I love baseball. I’m a pitcher and play center field. My favorite team is the Red Sox. I love to listen to games on the radio, go to games, read about baseball and watch video clips on the computer.
I didn’t know about the story of Douglass Smith, who pitched one game in 1912 for the Red Sox, until I read about it on the front page of The Recorder on July 24. The mural looks cool and I think sends an important message — that all people should be able to play, if they want.
What happened to Douglass Smith was incredibly racist. I hear about racism all the time in the news. It’s still happening today. The story makes me want to see the mural. I’m going to go to Millers Falls, and tell my friends to go see it, too. I’m glad a lot of people worked to make it happen.
