Matt Gilbert was a perfect 3-for-3 with a double and Dakota Dodge clubbed a home run and a double as Smitty’s Pub doubled up R.G. Penfield and Sons, 8-4, in a Greenfield Co-Rec Adult League slo-pitch softball first-round A Division playoff game Tuesday night at Green River Park No. 1.
Cassy Jouannet also had a hit in the victory for fourth-seeded Smitty’s, which advanced to play No. 1 Bath Fitter in the next round of the double-elimination tournament on Saturday at 9 a.m. at Hillside Park.
Hannah Bellows doubled for fifth-seeded Penfield, while Chris Bowman was 2-for-3 with a home run and a double. The squad will play in a losers’ bracket game on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
• Elsewhere, Riff’s North overcame an early deficit to rebound and capture a wild 19-17 win over Taylor’s Tavern in a B Division first round game Tuesday at Greenfield Middle School.
Mike Kendall was 5-for-5 with four RBI and four runs scored for Riff’s, while Carolyn Waskiewiez and Elyse Galvin smacked four hits each in the victory.
Codie Chapin powered Taylor’s, which scored 10 runs in the first inning to jump ahead. Chapin was 4-for-5 with two home runs, including an inside-the-park grand slam. Chelsea Tierney added three hits for Taylor’s.
Riff’s, the fourth-seeded team in the B Division field, will play in the next round on Saturday at 9 a.m.
CCG Tuesday Ladies
Nancy Donoghue, Ginny Freeman and Irene McDonald combined for a 139 to take home first place as the Tuesday Morning 18-hole Ladies League at the Country Club of Greenfield held a two best net scores for the team.
Michele Hazlett, Donna Mowry and Phyllis Canon nabbed second place with a total of 142.
Erving League
Matt Deane and Paul Barnard fired a 35 to snag low-gross honors at Tuesday’s Erving League played at the Northfield Golf Club.
The low-net contest was won by Peter McAndrews and Steve Bigwood with a score of 28.
Barnard earned closest-to-the-pin honors on No. 6 (46 feet, 8 inches), while Dennis Fournier was closest on No. 7 (14-7).
Deane was the match medalist with a 36.
Edge Hill Men’s League
Bob Story’s low gross of 37 paced the A Division at the Edge Hill Men’s League on Tuesday.
Brett Sallee was the low-net winner with a 30, while Mark Eaton was the point quota winner with a plus-4. Sallee was closest to the pin on No. 16 (20-6).
In B Division action, Tom Miner’s 42 gave him the low-gross score. Zach Bitzer (30) was low-net winner, while Miner was top point quota scorer at plus-7½. Jon Sonntag was closest on No. 16 (12-8).
Matt’s Men’s League
George Handschuh’s 37 put him atop the leaderboard in the low-gross portion of Tuesday’s Matt’s Men’s League at Thomas Memorial Golf & Country Club in Turners Falls.
Keith Mildren captured low net with a 28, while Handschuh and Jon Snow had the most points on the week with six.
Handschuh was closest to the pin on No. 7 (13-2), while Mark Letourneau was closest on No. 9 (5-0).
Bob Samson and Jim Bassett lead the league with 18½ points, followed by Letourneau and Al Ghiz with 17½.
Bernardston Rec
The Bernardston Recreation Department is now accepting registrations for youth soccer. Forms are available at the Town Hall and will also be available at Cushman Library. Completed forms may be dropped off Monday through Thursday, or mailed to the Recreation Department, 38 Church Street, Town Hall, Bernardston, MA. 01337.
Players in grades 3 through 6 must be registered by Sept. 1 to participate in the Youth Soccer League. Players in grades pre-K through 2 are also encouraged to register early.

Don Maynard Race
The third annual Don Maynard 5-Mile Road Race and 3-Mile Walk is scheduled for Sept. 16 at the Greenfield Municipal Swimming Area.

Montague Mug Race
The 37th annual Montague Mug Race is scheduled for Aug. 19, with the 5.5-mile road race “blasting” off at 8:30 a.m. from the Village Common.
Pewter Mugs are awarded to top male and female finishers, and coffee mugs will go to top finishers of each division. T-shirts are given to the first 90 runners. The course is well marked with plenty of water stops, and features a few challenging hills with a run along the Connecticut River.
Now in its 13th year, the Mini Mug Race will kick off at 8:35 a.m. This course measures two miles and is a great scenic route around the Old South Cemetery. Both races will finish at the ball field. All runners are entered into drawing for local prizes.

Old Coach A 5K
Registration is underway for The Old Coach A 5K Run, intended to be a celebration of the coaching career of Southwick High School’s Dick Atkinson.
Coach A, a 1984 inductee into the Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association Hall of Fame, is a legend among runners in Western Massachusetts. During his 53-year tenure at Southwick he trained numerous WMass, State, and New England individual champions and earned numerous league and divisional team championships. Coach Atkinson is the founder of indoor track in the Pioneer Valley, a league which has grown to 27 teams. Proceeds from the race will be used to fund scholarships for runners and to promote youth running programs in Western Mass.

Babe Ruth Fall Ball
The Franklin County Babe Ruth Baseball Association will hold registrations for its Fall Baseball League on two upcoming dates:
On Saturday the league will hold registrations from 10 a.m. until noon, and on Sunday and the league will hold registrations from 1 until 3 p.m. All registration sessions will take place at Abercrombie Field in Greenfield.
The Fall League is open to anyone ages 12 through 14. Babe Ruth is the next step for those players aging out of Cal Ripken next season and Fall Ball is a great introduction to a full-size diamond.

The Pioneer Valley Pole Vault School in Bernardston is open by appointment for individual and group lessons through the fall with negotiable rates.
Lessons will be taught by Pioneer Valley Regional School track and Northfield Mount Hermon pole-vault coach Jim Bell, himself a Masters pole vaulter.
