Selectboard looks to further engage with school district

LEYDEN — The town’s Selectboard members expressed interest during their meeting last week in further engaging with the Pioneer Valley Regional School District, particularly as fiscal year 2024 budget discussions get underway.

Municipal Assistant Michele Giarusso chairs Pioneer’s Budget Subcommittee.

“Michelle has been urging us emphatically and consistently to get involved, and she’s absolutely right,” Selectboard member Glenn Caffery said at this week’s meeting. “I’ve been trying to attend meetings virtually and dig through past meetings to get informed, but that doesn’t really count as involvement.”

Caffery said he wants to be involved with discussions and he hopes his work schedule will lighten so he can do so.

Solicitation policy under talks

LEYDEN — The Selectboard is considering the potential adoption of an updated solicitation policy in town.

Selectboard members Glenn Caffery and Katherine DiMatteo said they have reviewed the proposal, but Caffery is concerned that the policy does not clearly separate non-commercial canvassing activity from soliciting.

“I think we would want to be very clear about what is not covered,” he said.

DiMatteo noted the town can adopt a policy but any bylaw would have to be approved by voters at Town Meeting.

Municipal Assistant Michele Giarusso noted Police Chief James Palmeri has strongly suggested the Selectboard adopt a policy.

Earl has worked in health care for nine years. She is currently the infection prevention coordinator at the Brattleboro Retreat in Vermont.

Selectboard OKs gas storage tank

BERNARDSTON — The Selectboard has approved installing a 500-gallon gasoline storage tank at the Highway Garage, costing $18,617.

The tank will only contain gasoline, not diesel. Selectboard members said they will use some earmarked funding secured by state Sen. Jo Comerford, D-Northampton, to help with the costs.
