GREENFIELD — A Vermont woman narrowly avoided injury Friday morning when a large maple tree fell on her car while she was driving on the Mohawk Trail across from the Lipton Mart.
Driver Carol Root said she was on her way to work when she saw the tree falling, but was unable to stop her Toyota Corolla in time to avoid it. The tree landed on her hood, smashing her windshield. She noted there was a group of motorcyclists in front of her and that they were lucky to have made it past in time.
The Greenfield Police and Fire departments responded until the Department of Public Works arrived to remove the tree, which temporarily blocked the road. Westbound traffic was detoured up Newton Street while eastbound traffic cut through the gas station’s parking lot.
