GREENFIELD — Residents came out Saturday in support of the Franklin County Fairgrounds’ second annual tag sale.
The event, which ran from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, was organized by the Franklin County Agricultural Society, according to Mike Nelson, president. All proceeds went to the fairgrounds.
“It’s our tag sale to clean out the closets here at the fairgrounds, as well as some of the closets of our volunteers at home,” he said. “It’s an opportunity to raise a few dollars for the fairgrounds as we continue to navigate uncertain waters of the COVID-19 pandemic.”
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the agricultural society was forced to cancel the annual Franklin County Fair last year, typically held in September at the fairgrounds.
Saturday’s tag sale offered a variety of books, CDs, kitchenware, clothes and furniture, among other items. Customers, who were required to wear masks, entered through one side of the Youth Hall and exited through the other, where volunteers collected cash for their purchases. A limited number of people were allowed in the building at one time to limit crowding.
Nelson said if the fairgrounds were to make $1,000 by the end of the day on Saturday, “that would really be a great morning for us.”
“We are very appreciative of the community support and whatever donations they’re able to offer us,” he said, in acknowledgement of customers offering more for their purchases than asked.
After an unusual year, he said, it’s nice to see people start to come out for some social activities at the fairgrounds.
“We’re really optimistic that in later summer we’ll start to see some different trends in the community as far as COVID,” Nelson said. “And we’ll start to have larger events again.”
Nelson said this year’s Franklin County Fair is scheduled to take place from Sept. 9 to Sept. 12.
