It’s time again for a splash of color and creativity to take over Heath’s Community Hall. The 8th annual Heath Arts Exhibition is set to open on Saturday, Aug. 31.

“This is a showcase and a celebration of the creativity that thrives in Heath,” said Harry Hallman, founder of the Heath Arts Exhibition and chair of the organizing committee. “The artistic talent and breadth of work that will be on display this year is truly spectacular.”

The exhibition will run for one week, through Sept. 7, featuring works from 30 Heath artists and crafters and featuring a range of mediums, including painting, drawing, illustration, photography, textiles, glassblowing, ceramics, woodworking, and more.

Each year, the exhibition showcases about 100 pieces, Hallman said. There is no theme; artists can submit whatever they like, and as long as they have a connection to Heath, they are welcome at the exhibition. And the art is all a mystery to organizers, who do not see the pieces until it is time to hang them up on Friday.

“The whole purpose of the event is community. Anyone with a connection to Heath is welcome to submit something from professional artists to retirees who started art as a hobby later in life,” said Jean Gran, one of the event organizers.

Some residents submit pieces year after year, others only occasionally. Hallman joked that some residents have lived in town for years and only recently learned about the exhibition and began to submit works. Artists can submit up to three pieces for the show, with no requirement for when it was created, as long as it has not been previously shown at the exhibition.

Hallman started the exhibition eight years ago when he was taking a painting class at Greenfield Community College. He had an assignment that required him to apply for a Massachusetts Cultural Council grant and had an idea to put together a showing of art for a few other Heath artists he knew.

To his surprise and delight, he was selected for the grant that funded the first show.

“It was a homework assignment that became reality,” Hallman said.

An opening reception will be held on Sunday, Sept. 1, from 2 to 4 p.m. outside the Community Hall on the village green. All are invited to meet the artists, enjoy light refreshments, and hear live music from local band The Uncles.

Hallman said the reception is always a hit, and highlights the immense creativity of the community.

“It’s one of the better events in Heath,” he said.
