GREENFIELD — The community is invited to peruse handcrafted goods created by local artists while supporting the creation of a new community clay studio at this year’s Artspace Market.
Artspace Community Arts Center will host its 46th annual Artspace Market on Saturday, April 12, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Greenfield High School cafeteria. This year’s event serves as a fundraiser to support constructing a community clay studio at the arts center on Mill Street.
“The market is held every year to fundraise for Artspace’s equipment and programming. It started 46 years ago as the much-beloved [Pottery Seconds and More Sale],” said Artspace Director Madeline Miller. “A bunch of potters got together to sell their seconds. A second is something with a minor flaw, or something that doesn’t quite match an artist’s style or vision. So the market started as a group of artists selling their not-quite-perfect pottery and evolved into a market with a whole range of artists selling all sorts of goods. … It’s very multidisciplinary.”
This year’s market features more than 20 artists from across the Pioneer Valley, and handmade goods including jewelry, wood carvings, pottery and more. Each of the participating artists will be donating 35% of their proceeds toward constructing a clay studio at the center.
“We launched our fundraising efforts last November, and now we’re just shy of $60,000 toward a $100,000 goal,” Miller said.
Miller said she’s hoping the market will raise at least $5,000. In addition to the proceeds donated from the artists’ sales, Artspace will accept donations at the door.
“It’s not required to enter, but we’d love if people could give $5 at the door,” she said.
Artspace also runs a raffle each year at the market, Miller said. This year, raffle tickets are a bit more expensive than in the past, at $10, but the prizes are more unique and tie in with the community clay studio efforts. Prizes include a chance to win naming rights to the studio’s kiln; a private tour of the studio before it opens; private lessons for families, individuals and couples; and one of the first test pieces fired in the kiln when Artspace employees work to calibrate it.

Miller said the Artspace team wanted to offer prizes that would allow people to engage with the clay studio they were raising money for.
“It’s fun and different, and a chance for people to be a part of this new thing we’re putting together for Greenfield,” Miller said.
