GREENFIELD — The Supper for Six food drive is once again collecting donations to ensure local food pantries and family programs will have plenty to offer during the busy February school vacation week.

Women’s Way, the affinity group of United Way of the Franklin & Hampshire Region, is running the drive, which is now in its 21st year.

“We’re hoping for another good collection of food for local families,” said Jenny Coeur, the United Way’s program manager. “I think it’s going to be another tough year for many families, financially.”

Community members, businesses and organizations are invited to drop off reusable grocery bags filled with nonperishable dinner ingredients — such as rice and canned proteins, pastas and canned vegetables, and nut butters and jelly — for a family of six at the United Way’s offices at 51 Davis St. on Tuesday, Feb. 11, from 4 to 6 p.m. The following day will serve as a snow date for the event, if needed.

Though school breaks are welcomed by many students, the lack of school food services can pose a serious challenge to struggling families already dealing with food insecurity. The ongoing housing crisis and continued high food prices only contribute to the need for additional support. Feeding America’s latest “Map the Meal Gap” data reports that 11.6% of Franklin County residents face food insecurity, and nearly 1,900 of them are children.

Anyone who would like to donate bags of food but is unable to make the drive-thru event can bring them to the United Way’s office. Coeur said all gifts made by check or online will go toward purchasing additional food for distribution. She said the local community always seems to come through for those in need.

“They’re very responsive,” she said. “We have a donor base that enjoys putting together the bags.”

Last year, United Way community partner organizations distributed 414 bags of food collected through Supper for Six. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Western Massachusetts, The United Arc, the Mary Lyon Foundation, the Franklin County Community Meals Program and Community Action’s Center for Self-Reliance will distribute all donations to local families before and during February school vacation.
