Dorothy Wood

Turners Falls, MA – Dorothy Jane (Hazard) Wood, 90, of Chestnut Street, died Wednesday 9/9/26 at home. She was born in Saint Albans, VT on July 17, 1936, the daughter of Vernon R. and Carolyn A. (Ballard) Hazard.

Dorothy graduated from Bellows Free Academy, Saint Albans, VT in 1955. She attended and received her certificate as a Licensed Practical Nurse from the Thompson School of Nursing in Brattleboro, VT. She married Lyle K. Wood in 1958, (divorced 1976), and began her nursing career at the Farren Memorial Hospital until its closing as a medical facility and returned to finish her career when it became the Farren Care Center.

Dorothy loved to travel and cherished her trip to England where she met her pen pal with whom she had been corresponding since they were children during World War II. She was prolific at sewing and enjoyed knitting and reading.

Among her survivors, Dorothy leaves daughters Sandra Wood of Turners Falls with whom she lived, Sheila Knazick (Curt) of Sarasota, Florida and Susan Bassett (Kermit) of Windsor, VT.; grandson Haven Knazick (Cassidy); sister Susan Brewer of Lamesa, Texas; nieces, nephews and their families.

She is predeceased by her parents, brother Vernon and sister Norma.

Dorothy considered her dear friend of more than 50 years, Janice Brown and family as her extended family. Their support and inclusion through the years was appreciated beyond words.

Per Dorothy’s wishes, there will be no services. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family.
