SOUTH DEERFIELD — Two vehicles were involved in a head-on collision on Greenfield Road (Routes 5 and 10) on Tuesday morning, leading one driver to sustain multiple suspected fractures.

According to Deerfield Police Chief John Paciorek Jr., the Deerfield Police Department, South Deerfield Fire District and South County EMS responded to the crash, which occurred near the Yankee Candle corporate building, just south of the state highway’s intersection with North Main Street, at 6:59 a.m.

Paciorek said a 25-year-old man from Turners Falls was driving southbound on Greenfield Road in a black 2005 Subaru before veering into the oncoming lane and striking a red 2012 Jeep Liberty that was traveling northbound. South Deerfield firefighters extricated the man using hydraulic rescue equipment before he was transported to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield for treatment of multiple suspected fractures, according to Paciorek.

The driver of the Jeep, a 23-year-old woman from Chesterfield, sustained minor injuries and was transported to Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton. There were no passengers in either vehicle.

After the crash, the South Deerfield Fire District closed the portion of Greenfield Road from where it meets North Main Street and Mill Village Road down to its intersection with Conway Road. Both vehicles were towed and Paciorek said the road reopened at 8:01 a.m.

The chief said the crash remains under investigation by Deerfield Police Officer Tanner Finch.
