With the partial release of the Epstein Files a number of puzzling questions have emerged. As we watch powerful, wealthy people from around the world exposed as having had varying degrees of association with the convicted sexual offender we wonder; Why did they have anything to do with him? Some prominent figures from the worlds of government, finance, entertainment and academia are facing consequences now that the world knows they had dealings with Epstein. Though the levels and nature of contact varies, each case contains at least some common threads. These were individuals that wanted to use their proximity to Epstein to get something. The second is that they were familiar with his character and deeds. Each had made the calculation that interacting with this horrible individual was worth the price.

Now that things are more out in the open the equation seems quite different. Thus far dozens of public figures have either been forced out or resigned from leadership positions. Interestingly, there seems to be less tolerance for Epstein adjacent activity in countries outside the United States. Heads are rolling and it looks as if more will be added. Almost daily the news contains public statements of regret from figures whose names have been revealed. Often the apologies are framed as “lapses in judgement.” Almost every contrition includes a claim about not knowing what Epstein had been doing. Notably, almost no one, except the victims came forward willingly and almost all of those now being identified admit to anything beyond what has been publicly revealed.

Thus far, most of the names of those that participated directly in the worst of Epstein’s deeds remain unknown to the general public. For now. In the meanwhile, as a society, we seem to be acknowledging that any dealings with this loathsome individual in ways large and small enabled him to commit unspeakable acts. In other words, he didn’t do this alone. Those in his orbit supported and helped him by treating him as if he was just another business associate, just another donor, just another friend.

Our current president was once a close friend of Jeffrey Epstein. It is not surprising that the two bonded as they both were much alike in their predatory nature towards girls and women. They both craved wealth and power. Each showed a disregard for the rights and feelings of others, were highly manipulative and lied compulsively. President Trump claims to have broken off contact with Epstein years ago. It isn’t possible to know how and why this happened as the president has given various conflicting stories.

As the Trump administration, mainly known for dishonesty, cruelty and corruption continues, when will those associated with the president be held to account? What calculation did members of his cabinet and Republicans in Congress make in supporting this deeply flawed individual? As with his friend Epstein, POTUS relies on a network of supporters to assist him in his crimes. A time will come when they too are regarded in the way we now look at Epstein’s associates and enablers. Each, (including the 12,428 voters in Franklin County) have, to varying degrees, diminished themselves despite knowing what he was, treating Trump like just another president.
