Potholes Pictures presents ‘Monsoon Wedding’

SHELBURNE FALLS — What happens when a stressed father, a bride with second thoughts and relatives from around the world travel for a modern Indian wedding? Moviegoers can find out during the Potholes Pictures screening of “Monsoon Wedding” on Friday, Feb. 20, and Saturday, Feb. 21.

Screenings of the award-winning film from 2001 will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Shelburne Falls Theater at Memorial Hall on State Street. Prior to the film, attendees can enjoy musical performances. Abdul Baki will take the stage at 7 p.m. on Friday and Abbracci Libera will perform on Saturday.

Superintendent contract extension approved

BUCKLAND — The Mohawk Trail and Hawlemont regional school committees both approved a four-year contract extension with Superintendent Sheryl Stanton last week.

Under the contract, Stanton will see 1.5% raises in fiscal years 2027 and 2028, and salary increases between 6% and 8% in fiscal year 2029 and 2030, to be negotiated depending on the financial stability of the district in those years. Mohawk Trail Regional School District School Committee Chair Martha Thurber told committee members that the only changes to the contract are salary increases.

In FY27, Stanton’s salary will be $152,971.

“I think we’re very pleased with the contract extension,” Hawlemont Regional School District School Committee Chair Kenneth Bertsch told Stanton at the Feb. 9 meeting.

Heath spaghetti dinner set for Feb. 28

HEATH — The Heath Firefighters Association will host its annual spaghetti dinner to raise money for the Fire Department on Saturday, Feb. 28.

Dine-in service is from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Jacobs Road Municipal Center at 18 Jacobs Road. Takeout meals will be available from 4 to 5 p.m. Each meal includes spaghetti, garlic bread, salad, a beverage and dessert.

Tickets are $15. A snow date has been set for Sunday, March 1.

Potholes Pictures presents ‘The Killing’

SHELBURNE FALLS — Learn what happens when crook Johnny Clay assembles a five-man team to plan and execute a daring racetrack robbery during Potholes Pictures’ presentation of the 1956 film “The Killing” on Friday, Feb. 27, and Saturday, Feb. 28.

Screenings of the black-and-white film written and directed by Stanley Kubrick will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Shelburne Falls Theater at Memorial Hall on State Street. Prior to the film, attendees can enjoy musical performances by The Chester Vale Trio on Friday at 7 p.m. and by Whisperholler on Saturday.

Smartphone photography workshop set for March 18

SHELBURNE — The Shelburne Grange will welcome photographer Martin Yaffee for a free presentation on smartphone photography on Wednesday, March 18, at 6:30 p.m. at Fellowship Hall, 17 Little Mohawk Road. Attendees will learn how to compose artistic photos using a smartphone camera.

Yaffee has never taken a photography lesson or learned how to use an SLR or DSLR camera. His pictures are taken with a Note or Galaxy Ultra phone camera, and refined using iPhoto software on an old iMac computer. He is trained in music composition and culinary arts, and holds degrees in music composition from the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard University.
