GREENFIELD — Members of the Greenfield Fire and Police departments and the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office came together Tuesday afternoon to promptly rescue a dog from the Green River parallel to Deerfield Street.
The rescue, which was complete within minutes, occurred after firefighters who were returning from a call noticed the dog running around on the ice.
“[They] were able to grab the dog pretty quickly,” Greenfield Fire Chief Robert Strahan said. “The dog was walking up and down the river, fell through the [ice] at one point, got itself out, and then was very close to going over the dam down by Meridian Street. Luckily, crews were able to grab the dog and bring it to shore.”
Strahan said he was unsure who the dog belonged to, but he expressed relief that the animal is safe and the rescue was successful.
