Nathan Gheorghita tallied a pair of goals, and the visiting Franklin Tech boys soccer team scored its biggest win of the season Thursday on the strength of a 4-3 victory over Greenfield.
Jon Gheorghita and Sorin Marin also tallied for the Eagles, which improved to 4-1 on the season. Nathan Gheorghita’s 63rd-minute stroke proved to be the game-winning goal.
“Our goal this year has been to compete,” said Franklin Tech coach Dan Prasol. “We still have to do it for a whole game but every day we’re just trying to be 1% better.”
Lucian Volosenco scored twice for Greenfield (2-3-1), including a 65th-minute goal that cut the deficit to 4-3. Jack Laurie had a goal and an assist, and Grayson Thomas notched two assists for the hosts.
“Greenfield is a very good and talented team,” Prasol said. “I couldn’t be more proud of how these kids are working together to improve. The season is far from over but we’re showing some great growth and chemistry.”
Liam Grahame-Lawson made eight saves for the Green Wave, and Tech goalie Jakob George made eight saves as well.
Hopkins 2, Pioneer 0 โ Scoreless into the second half, the visiting Golden Hawks struck for a pair after intermission to capture a 2-0 win on Thursday in Northfield.
Girls soccer
Pioneer 4, Athol 1 โ The visiting Panthers led 1-0 at halftime, then exploded for three goals after halftime en route to a Bi-County League win under the lights at O’Brien Field.
Dzelila Cecunjanin netted a hat trick for Pioneer, and Deveney Pillsbury also found the back of the net.
Hannah Cordoso tallied for Athol, and goalie Addy Proctor made eight saves.
Hampshire 0, Frontier 0 โ Jazzy Hayes made 17 huge saves for the Redhawks, as Hayes responded to the Raiders pressure by making play after play to secure the tie.
Field hockey
Amherst 3, Franklin Tech 0 โ Aria Haupt tallied twice on penalty strokes for the Hurricanes in a 3-0 victory on Thursday.
Tech goalie Redyn Gutierrez made nine saves for the home team.
Hampshire 5, Mahar 0 โ Lily Connor scored a pair of goals, lifting the Raiders to a County League win on Thursday.
Bella Burnett made 12 saves in net for Mahar.
West Springfield 1, Mohawk Trail 0 – Brynlee Purington made five saves for the Warriors in a tight road loss in West Springfield on Thursday night.
Volleyball
Baystate Academy 3, Frontier 0 โ Six kills apiece from Avah Spearance and Greta Hale werenโt enough for the Redhawks as they fell to Baystate on Thursday.
Set scores were 25-21, 25-19, 25-9.
Spearance added 19 assists, Caitlin Maio had five kills, 10 assists and five aces while Kaelyn Johnson tied a team-high with eight digs.
Golf
Athol 152, Mohawk Trail 216 โ Ethan Heuer fired a 1-under 34 and the Bears cruised to a dominant win on Thursday at Ellinwood Country Club.
Brandon Adams and Owen Stoddard each shot 39 for Athol, and Dominik St. Andre added a 40 in a strong overall performance for the hosts.
Sam Mizula led Mohawk Trail with a 49, while Jacob Richardson carded a 51. Joei Labelle (57) and Carl Jermstrom (59) also scored for the Warriors.
Frontier 151, Franklin Tech 164 โ Brady Wood broke par with a 1-under 34, and the Redhawks won a competitive match on Thursday at Cherry Hill Golf Course in Amherst.
Christian Powell shot 37 to aid the Frontier cause, and Tyler Galenski also broke 40 with a 39. It was career low rounds for both players.
Jack Day and Braeden Talbot each shot 38 to lead the way for Franklin Tech.
McCann Tech 166, Pioneer 194 โ Carter Gerry shot 46 to power the Panthers, while Mike Cyhowski and Parker Gerry carded rounds of 49 for Pioneer.
Hopkins 170, Turners 198 โ Ethan Eichorn’s 45 was the low round of the day for the Thunder in a loss on Thursday.
