History is a hard taskmaster. Just as today, people throughout history have aimed for greatness, adulation, worship, vast wealth, and more. Some have achieved it, but only for a time. So many nations and rulers have come and gone and many of the greatest are only remembered by people who read dust covered books. Sumaira, Punt, Persia, all once the most powerful in the known world. Now forgotten. Aleander, Attila, Boudacia, once immensely powerful. Now no one knows where their remains are.
In the world today people are living a life much freer than that of their fathers and grandparents. Many reveling as hedonists, doing drugs, with piercings and tattoos, choosing alternate lifestyles, even choosing to surgically change their biology and more. They can do that because that freedom was granted in the Bill of Rights. The First Amendment to our Constitution.
A lot of people are upset, even angry about those actions. There are people who want to take that anger and use it to take away our freedom. They believe that people are inherently evil and need domination. The problem is “domination” for some is domination for all. Those people want to change our democracy to an authoritarian state. One where they are the dominators.
Churchill, a man who helped lead his country to victory against another authoritarian who wanted to take over the world, enslave people, slaughter whole populations, confiscate lands and steal their wealth, when asked about democracy said “It is the worst form of government except for all the others.”
I hope we continue to give our democracy a chance with all its problems because history has shown all the others to be failures only causing grief, bloodshed and untold hardship in their wake.
