For the third year in a row, the Franklin Tech girls basketball team stood atop the vocational field in Massachusetts on Sunday.
The second-seeded Eagles won their third consecutive MVADA state vocational tournament title, besting top-seeded Upper Cape Cod Tech, 58-51, in the title game on Sunday in Bourne.
Kyra Goodell led the way offensively for Franklin Tech, pouring in 21 points, while Hannah Gilbert posted a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds. Lea Chapman continued to be a double-double machine, scoring 14 points and pulling down 15 rebounds.
The Eagles led 17-14 after one quarter and 30-20 at halftime. Tech shot 17-for-24 from the free throw line to help put things away.
In the semifinals on Saturday night, Franklin Tech rolled to a 50-28 win over No. 3 Pathfinder in Turners Falls.
The Eagles stormed to a 17-3 lead after one quarter and led 30-10 at halftime.
Chapman’s 15-point, 10-rebound double-double paced Franklin Tech. Gilbert added 11 points and four steals, while Haleigh Benoit put together a strong game with six points and 12 rebounds. Goodell tossed in six points and Brayleigh Burgh notched five points and three boards.
Franklin Tech now turns its attention to the MIAA Division 5 state tournament. The 12th-seeded Eagles will host the winner of Wednesday’s game between No. 21 PV Christian and No. 44 C.A.S.H. in the Round of 32 later this week.
Girls All-States
Frontier’s Jocelyn Antes powered to a third-place finish at the MIAA Girls All-State Wrestling Championships over the weekend.
The sophomore took third at 120 pounds after posting a 5-1 record. She took down Worcester Tech’s Aaliyah Rivera in the third-place match.
Franklin Tech’s Mia Marigliano also wrestled to an impressive third-place finish at 126 pounds over the weekend. Marigliano went 5-1 overall, including a 4-2 decision over Nashoba Tech’s Natalia Jaramillo in the third-place match.
At 235, Tech’s Jacqueline Churchill finished sixth place after a 1-3 weekend at All-States. Delana Fausett of Mahar also competed at 165 pounds, dropping a pair of close matches.
