NORTHFIELD — An Amtrak commuter train carrying more than 100 passengers was reportedly struck by lightning Monday night, Northfield Police Chief Robert Leighton said.
There were no injuries, according to the police report.
Northfield police headed to River Road, off of Route 142, at around 9:10 p.m. Amtrak later arrived to the scene, according to the police report, and had to replace the engine of the train.
This was the first time in the about 30 years of work by Leighton that he has known of a train being struck by lightning in the area.
Amtrak spokesman Mike Tolbert said the train had a blown traction motor fuse. He said a rescue engine was dispatched to tow the train to Brattleboro, Vt., where passengers continued their journey by bus. Tolbert said the cause of the blown fuse remains under investigation.
