GREENFIELD — Two suspects have been arrested after allegedly engaging in a foot pursuit that caused staff and students at the Discovery School at Four Corners to temporarily shelter-in-place on Friday afternoon.

Following a roughly three-hour foot pursuit, Greenfield Police arrested Sebret Sanchez, 31, of Springfield, on two active warrants, as well as a host of criminal charges, including attempted kidnapping, carjacking and unarmed robbery. Sanchez was held without bail at his arraignment Monday morning in Greenfield District Court.

According to State Police Trooper Brandon Doherty, when troopers stopped a vehicle on Bernardston Road on Friday afternoon, the passengers exited the car and ran off. State and local police pursued two suspects — one man and one woman — on foot in a chase that allegedly involved carjacking, multiple incidents of assault and battery, and an attempted kidnapping. Greenfield Police brought in K-9 units to assist with tracking.

Greenfield Police Lt. Christopher Greene said at approximately 6 p.m., Sanchez asked a woman who was pulling out of her driveway on Dunnell Road to give him a ride to Turners Falls. When she declined, Greene said Sanchez allegedly opened the passenger side door, entered the car and attempted to take control of the vehicle.

“She proceeded to back out of the driveway, and he opened up the passenger side door and jumped in the car with her. The victim held the horn down to get the attention of anybody in the vicinity and [Sanchez] started trying to edge toward the driver’s seat,” Greene recounted. “The male was grabbing on the person’s arm, attempting to get her to stop sounding the vehicle’s horn. A family member was in the backyard by the pool, ran out front from the back [to see] what’s happening and yelled at [Sanchez] to get away.”

According to Greene, Sanchez exited the car after allegedly inflicting minor injuries on the woman during the struggle. Greene said residents on Wildwood Avenue later reported seeing Sanchez riding a bicycle heading east. Later in the evening, Sanchez allegedly knocked on a woman’s door on Sunrise Avenue and asked her to call 911, claiming he had been beaten.

Greene said when the woman pulled out her phone, Sanchez allegedly swiped it from her hands, pushed her to the ground and ran off with the phone toward Stone Farm Lane. Police arrested Sanchez on Sunrise Avenue and charged him with carjacking, attempted kidnapping, assault and battery on a person older than 60, unarmed robbery, assault and battery, witness intimidation and vandalism.

According to Doherty, State Police arrested another one of the passengers who allegedly fled the Bernardston Road traffic stop, Chloe O’Malley, 25, of Turners Falls, on a warrant, as well as charges of assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, carrying a dangerous weapon and possession of a Class B drug. Doherty said State Police also detained another passenger.
