Earth Day is right around the corner, and it’s one of my favorite days of the year. It often serves as a catalyst for community members from all walks of life to come together and do positive things for the environment. In my part of town, I’m proud to say that some folks have organized an Earth Day clean-up event, and it’s my pleasure to invite you to participate.

Neighbors from Precincts 5 and 7 are teaming up for a cooperative clean-up on Sunday, April 21 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. (rain date April 28). The Greenfield DPW will provide special blue trash collection bags, and we’ll provide the muscle. Starting at 11 a.m., you can pick up free trash bags and work gloves at one of two spots: Innovintage Place parking lot (Precinct 5) at 76 Hope St., or the Green River School parking lot (Precinct 7) at 62 Meridian St.

From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., tidy up your own street or nearby public areas. You can leave the blue trash bags on the sidewalk for curbside pickup — no sticker needed. From 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., you can team up with larger crews to tackle some trash “hot spots” on Russell Street or Deerfield Street. Details will be provided at the trash bag pick up locations.

While Precinct 5 and 7 residents are most encouraged to participate, all are welcome. Bring friends and make new friends; come when you can and work for as long as you want. Our simple hope is to beautify the streets we see every day while building connections with neighbors. Questions can be directed to greenfield5neighbors@gmail.com or 413-225-1955. Happy Earth Day!
